Volunteering at SBY provides an opportunity for groups and individuals to have a powerful and positive impact on the lives of young people and families in the District. An overview of volunteer opportunities is listed below. Both one-time experiences and ongoing positions are available.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please complete and submit the Volunteer Application (found at the bottom of the page) according to the directions.
SBY hosts, or participates in several community events each month. Volunteers are always needed to assist with set up/tear down, tabling, distribution of SBY materials, serving food and beverages, etc.
We now have a volunteer driven “After Hours” special events development team. Volunteers and Sasha Bruce Youthwork staffers meet at a restaurant on the last Tuesday of every month on new ways to create fundraising events and community partnerships.
SBY always has a need for hygiene items (deodorant, shaving materials, soap, shampoo, etc.), new baby items (diapers, wipes, socks, etc.), after-school snacks (cereal bars, water bottles, dry goods etc) and after-school activities (art supplies, school supplies, sports equipment). Volunteers can coordinate and facilitate a donation drive at their work place, neighborhood, or social network. The Drive can be however small or large that the volunteer has the capacity for.
Help individuals with basic skills, schoolwork, college prep, or interview skills. We also need tutors at our ITPM and Project HYPE programs on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. SBY currently needs after-school tutors in our programming at Richardson Dwellings during the hours of 3:00pm-6:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
For those volunteers who have already been cleared to work in a different capacity, mentoring opportunities are now available! Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, George Burton for more information about our new mentoring initiative via e-mail.
Work with staff to design and organize cultural, educational, athletic or recreational activities for groups of SBY youth. Examples of past events include Game Nights, Movie Nights, Field Days, and group discussions. We are open to ideas for new group activities.
Help keep SBY beautiful and functional by volunteering time, energy, skills, or supplies toward improving our programs. SBY welcomes assistance with landscaping, gardening, repair work, painting, sewing, and building.
Increase SBY’s effectiveness by contributing your professional knowledge. Everything from legal advice to interior design, electrical wiring to health care is welcome. Computer and fundraising advice and assistance are particularly helpful.
For all available internship opportunities, please contact Vera Johnson via e-mail.
For more information on volunteering with Sasha Bruce Youthwork, contact George Burton via e-mail.
All volunteers are subject to a Criminal Background Check and fingerprinting.
