SBY’s Prevention, Outreach, Wellness, Education & Risk Reduction (POWER) program, along with the medical experience of nursing students and staff from Everest College, is looking forward to hosting six topical workshops during the course of September.
The students and staff will collaborate with POWER staff to provide services surrounding the most pertinent community including diabetes, obesity and basic health practices and more.
The workshops are set to take place during the remaining Tuesdays and Thursdays of September, on the following schedule:
Thursday, September 6: Nutrition
Tuesday, September 11: Hypertension
Thursday, September 13: Stress & Self Care
Tuesday, September 18: Obesity & Weight Management
Thursday, September 20: Health Practices
Tuesday, September 25: Diabetes
The Tuesday events will take place at the DC Prevention Center/ Sasha Bruce House basement located at 1022 Maryland Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002 and Thursdays workshops will be hosted at the SBY Administration building basement at 745 8th Street, SE, Washington, DC, 20003.
While there is a dedicated curriculum for this month’s events, the staff will also be available to discuss any number of other health-related concerns. This form of education-based programming is at the core of POWER’s mission to provide health based services to DC youth and their families. SBY recognizes that youth who are educated about their health and have safe ways of spending time outside of school will be much less likely to engage in dangerous and unhealthy behaviors. Throughout the year POWER provides HIV testing and prevention, general sexual health education as well as family counseling and individual case management services to youth from other SBY programs as well as those from the community.
Donate to Sasha Bruce to support these kinds of programs and events.
