Building Opportunities

The uneven quality of education for students in certain DC neighborhoods is front page news on a regular basis. Not only are schools for at-risk youth not providing the high-quality education that our children need and deserve, many schools fail to engage students at even the most basic level, resulting in an alarming drop-out rate, especially among students of color. Research demonstrates that students who are stimulated and nurtured in school as well as during out-of-school time are more likely to avoid early pregnancy and involvement in the criminal justice system. Youth development programs and mentoring are proven practices that help young people stay healthy and focused on their future.
