The DC Prevention Center for Wards 5 & 6 is a collaborative venture in conjunction with the Department of Health (DOH), Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration (APRA), and Sasha Bruce Youthwork. The Center has been established at 1022 Maryland Avenue, N.E. in the basement of the Sasha Bruce House emergency shelter. This space was selected because of its rich history as a safe haven for youth in the District. Also, this space is in close proximity to the Wards 5 & 6 boundary line, which gives us maximum accessibility to both Wards. We plan to use a Strategic Planning Framework to address three outcomes: Community Education, Community Leadership and Community Changes. We will identify risk factors that contribute to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among children and youth in the District. The targeted population for this initiative are youth ages 8 to 18 and those in the community that influence them (peers, families, caregivers, and communities). Priority risk factors and outcomes are expected to expand and change as we identify the protective factors that will reduce the onset of drug use in our communities. Ultimately, our Ward-level efforts will help the District design its long-term prevention strategies.
Our vision is to support a healthy and drug free District of Columbia where all children are safe, drug free and connected and supported by a network of caring families, community organizations, and faith based organizations. As we identify prevalent risk factors within Wards 5 & 6, it will be important to engage in community conversations and trainings that will help to develop and sustain an infrastructure of community leadership.
We also offer and host:
• Structured trainings and workshops that will increase community knowledge, skills, and awareness of substance abuse trends and indicators
• Community Conversations on underage drinking, so-called gateway drugs and risk & protective factors
Obama’s Drug Czar R. Gil Kerlikowske (second from left) and SBY Executive Director, Deborah Shore (third from left) take part in conversation on community issues..
