Eve Colberg, 16, is a current resident of Sasha Bruce’s Independent Living Program, a residential facility for homeless teens. Colberg currently works in the office of Mayor Fenty.

Colberg landed her job as a direct result of attending the Virgin Mobile Freefest, an entirely free concert in which “FreeIP” tickets were distributed to those who performed a certain number of service hours in their community.

“I met the Mayor during an interview he was doing with Ms. Debby Shore, he offered it to me on the spot,” Colberg said.

As Sasha Bruce was one of the beneficiaries of the benefit concert, a number of employees, volunteers and clients were given the opportunity to attend the festival; including executive director, Deborah Shore, and SBY client “Eve Colberg.”

It is opportunities such as these that SBY is occasionally able to provide for youth.

SBY has helped me achieve my goals, and I am at the highest point in my life so far. I’m finally getting good grades in school, and managing two jobs,” Colberg said.

SBY works diligently to broaden horizons and open doors for youth who would otherwise go unnoticed. Many SBY clients come from some of the poorest communities in the district, where falling by the wayside is far too easy.

“[Working with the Mayor’s office] gives me the inspiration to know that I can reach my goals,” Colberg said.
