Harolyn, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, shares her motivation for volunteerism
Between work and social connections, free time can feel scarce. But what if dedicating a few hours of your time could help change someone’s life?
Volunteering at Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) does just that for many individuals and groups in the Greater Washington region and beyond. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds demonstrate community care for the young people we serve. They help transform not only our physical spaces but the lives of the young people who call them home. We recently spoke with Harolyn Brown, one of our recurring volunteers, about her experience.
Meet Harolyn
Harolyn, a native Washingtonian, always looks for local volunteer opportunities because DC is where her heart is. She first volunteered with us through her workplace, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and was drawn to the proximity to her home. She has continued to volunteer because she values the impact of our work and the part she is able to play.
She feels welcomed and inspired by the supportive, vibrant environment at Sasha Bruce.“I have many memorable moments from volunteering with Sasha Bruce, but one that stands out is working on the Jonathan & Hannah Allen House. My twin daughters, Destiny and Damiyah, who share my love for helping others, volunteered with me on Project Move: Allen House. I built furniture and added finishing touches like mirrors to make the rooms feel warm and welcoming. My daughters helped paint the beautiful “You Are Not Alone” mural in the entryway. Seeing the completed home, knowing we contributed to making it a safe space for youth and young adults, fills me with pride.” – Harolyn
Harolyn emphasized the flexible, welcoming environment for volunteers. She shared that SBY meets you at your skill and comfort level, allowing you to stick to what you know or push yourself further without any pressure. Tasks like building furniture and decorating rooms have enhanced her skills in project management, flexibility, and teamwork. They have also allowed her to bond with the college student volunteer community.
“Sasha Bruce has some of the best volunteers around. They’re always so kind and enthusiastic.”
Harolyn shared how meaningful the mission of providing safe housing for youth in need is.
“I feel like my efforts help [Sasha Bruce Youthwork] secure housing for more young people at a faster rate,” she said, noting how important it is for these youth to know they are in a safe, caring environment.
Harolyn has even brought her children and grandchildren to the service days, emphasizing how meaningful it is to watch them give back, whether it’s supporting others or feeding the unstably housed community.
We are grateful to Harolyn for her belief in building a better society by not only addressing homelessness but also supporting the academic, behavioral, and social growth of families across DC.
A Closing Note From Harolyn To Our Readers:
“Jump in and get involved! SBY’s positive impact on our community is significant — but they can’t do it alone. Make a financial donation, serve in a special role like my friend Major Lewis did. Volunteer your time by building furniture, decorating, or preparing meals. Corporate support and volunteers are essential. I hope that when youth and families enter a Sasha Bruce location, they feel the love and positive energy that goes into creating and maintaining each home. I’m inspired by the wonderful staff and fellow volunteers I’ve met, including Danny Rico, Jasmine Thakurdas, Pierre Aba, Shaunda Patterson-Strachan, Ms. Vernell, and others who make the experience so special. The Volunteer Appreciation event was a delightful surprise, and I’m grateful for the chance to collaborate with such passionate individuals. Together, we are building a stronger, brighter tomorrow!”
