This year is a milestone for Sasha Bruce Youthwork. In honor of our 40th Anniversary, we continue our celebration at Howard Theatre, April 22nd, 2015!
It started with a Capitol File party, followed by a Gala Dinner at the British Ambassador’s Residence. Over the past several months, our youth have also been profiled in local media including Capitol File, Washington Mom, and in the Washington Post, where SBYwas one of three organizations selected to be part of the WP Helping Hands fundraising campaign!
On April 22, 2015 we will present the first ever SBY Benefit Concert at the Howard Theatre.
Our event—Connecting Youth to Opportunities—will raise the profile of our work with homeless youth, and the funds for our next 40 years. Our utlimate goal is this: To eliminate youth homelessness in the District. A portion of the proceeds will support a new endowment for a Social Work Fellowship, to be unveiled that evening and named in honor of a special guest and leader in the community.
Since its founding 40 years ago by current Executive Director, Debby Shore, the mission of Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) has been the same—to improve the lives of runaway, homeless and at-risk youth and their families in the Washington area. SBY achieves this by providing shelter, counseling, life skills training and positive youth development activities to 1,500 youth and 5,000 family members annually.
Since it opened the Sasha Bruce House in the early 70’s, SBY has reunited over 13,000 homeless youth with their families. Washington D.C.’s streets are currently “home” to over 3,000 youth, and the need for safe havens and positive youth development opportunities has never been greater. Incredibly, the Sasha Bruce House remains, to this day, the only youth-specific shelter in the nation’s capital. (Learn more about Sasha Bruce Youthwork at www.sashabruce.org.)
Sponsorship packages for our upcoming event at the Howard Theater begin at $5,000, and we are honored to already have the support of local businesses Mom’s Organic Market and Blissliving Home. Look forward to an inspiring group of event Chairs, and Honorary Co-chairs to include local and national public officials.
DC DJ Ben Chang will play during our cocktail and dessert receptions, and the program will feature a performance by the award winning acapella group Committed, a short film about SBY produced by the nonprofit Stone Soup Films, as well as a testimony from one or more of the young people who have benefited from our work, and a presentation to our special guest.
